Arthur Penn directed this tense and riveting 1962 film version of William Gibson’s play about Helen Keller (Patty Duke), a blind and deaf adolescent whose increasingly wild, angry behavior causes her desperate parents to hire teacher Anne Sullivan (Anne Bancroft) whose methods are forceful and unusual. Bancroft and Duke both won Academy Awards for their startling, physical performances.
